Pornography filmmakers began exploring new methods of representing sexual acts during the 1970s. This trend increased when VCRs became more affordable and video recording technology allowed longer scenes to be shot on a lower budget. By the 1980s, most movies followed certain rules and conventions such as foreplay (fellatio), anal penetration, and ending with close-ups of ejaculating penises (known as money or cum shots). With the onset of AIDS in early 1991s however, this phase in gay pornography came to an abrupt halt.

As researchers examine these films, it becomes evident that gay pornography is an extremely influential cultural force. It has transformed how we view male sex and masculinity; defined our identities as homosexual men; and even contributed to popular culture – from Marlon Brando’s performance as an undercover gay character in John Huston’s 1967 movie Reflections in a Golden Eye to Man on a Leash (1989).

Research in pornography may be limited by lack of access to films and interviewing performers; nevertheless, it remains a useful way of studying how it has developed over time. This special issue addresses many topics relevant to pornographic studies; for example gender plays an integral part in depictions of homosexual men; also taking into account gay pornography industry culture and its influences.

Lucy Neville delves into the cultural significance of pornographic images to demonstrate their role in shaping our understanding of sexuality, gender and power dynamics. Other contributors also explore textual qualities associated with gay porn and how this content has affected sexual discourse. Young’s article, ‘Gay Pornography and the Textuality of Masculinity,’ for instance, raises issues regarding masculinity models used within gay pornography and their influence over time on perceptions of men and sex. Such dialogue is key to comprehending how this genre has developed over time and continues to shape perceptions about masculinity and sex. Our editors hope that by providing a variety of perspectives on this special issue, we will gain a better understanding of the relationships among gay pornography, its audience, and cultural contexts in which it operates. Thus we may begin to grasp why and how this genre has become such an essential form of cultural expression for men around the globe.
